Sunny Hill Viking Obstacle Course Review

The Sunny Hill Viking Obstacle Course is one of the few of a growing number of permanent obstacle courses. One of the immediate things that make this course stand out is it’s proximity to New York City at only 2 hours north. The course is also conveniently located on the premises of the Sunny Hill Resort which is a family style resort to stay and bring the entire family while you get a few days of obstacle course racing in.

Read on for the details on what makes this course stand out:

Sunny Hill Viking Obstacle Course – Terrain

The terrain is not the part of this obstacle course that makes it stand out.  While there are scenic and very well marked trails with some fairly technical sections to slow you down; it has no real mountainous uphills. Most of the uphill and downhill sections have obstacles throughout them so you never get a sense you are on a non-stop uphill hike.

As you can see there is only 660 feet of total elevation change. But what they don’t have in ascents and descents they clearly make up for it when it comes to obstacles.

Sunny Hill Viking Obstacle Course – Obstacles

Sunny Hill is an obstacle racing purists type of course with some great and incredibly challenging obstacles. There are over 35 obstacles on the course and many of those would even count as more than one during traditional obstacle races, such as 5′, 6′, and 7′ foot walls count as one combined obstacle. Many of the obstacles will leave your grip strength completely destroyed.  They have a wall traverse that is 7 sections long compared to 1 section that you will get at a Spartan Race.

Some notes on the obstacles above –

The Troll Traps are a high feet type of obstacle similar to running through a group of tires.

Asgard Skywalk is nearly 140′ long, has a 20-30′ traverse over ground and ends with a walk up and over a rock pile on a long slanted beam.

Rune stones are about 5-7 large rocks/boulders that you have to climb over

Sunny Hill Viking Obstacle Course – Summary

After you go through the course you’ll learn that this is one hell of a course.  In difficulty I’d put it just over a Spartan Sprint with the course record being near an hour, I think the course record could definitely dip under an hour and closer to 45 minutes with some solid competition. If you are looking for a course to get some laps in and work on your obstacle skills this is the place for you. And with its surrounding area being mountainous you can potentially hit up a few laps of obstacle racing then head over to some nearby trails to get some good elevations in.
