2nd Surge Energy Gel Review

I came across 2nd Surge Energy Gel by Pacific Health Labs which is from the same makers as Accel Gel while prepping for my comprehensive gel comparison article.  After sampling the chocolate flavored gel I realized it deserved a review all on its own.

The taste of 2nd Surge chocolate is a deeper flavor that many gels.  It does have a slightly tingle from the rich flavor while consuming.  I highly suggest following with sips of water after each pull from the gel pouch.  The plus side to 2nd surge is that it doesn’t have a very medicine-y taste like some other caffeine and nutrient full gel packs.

The flavor from the Double Expresso has quite the bite to it similar to an actual double espresso.  It’s even more rich and intense than the chocolate which is already very rich, I only suggest this flavor if you love espresso.

There isn’t much to note here in terms of anything special.  They are a silver color which could help find them in a darker situation. And the other small plus worth pointing out is the top shape makes it easy to tear open, but leaves you with two pieces of trash because of no litter leash (like all but two gels)

When you eat a lot of gels a thing you realize is that they mostly all help on some level but a few really stand out in terms of performance.  2nd surge for me really stood out in terms of performance.  I’ve cruised through early morning fast distance training runs.  It has also helped with back to back workouts when I do speed and strength followed by a moderate paced distance run.  While it’s hard to judge the recovery benefits from the added protein they have, the direct performance results are hard to argue.

I find it surprisingly stomach friendly as well.  I’m pretty sensitive in the stomach and have had some pretty bad experiences with other gels.  One other gel even caused me to run off a long OCR course, mid race, and make quick use of the restrooms.

One of my main standout uses is to take one down first thing in the morning before a 6am pre-work workout.  I have a pretty normal routine of having a coffee and a bite to eat on a non exercise morning.  With that being said I guess I’ve become accustomed to the caffeine and a handful of food – this is the perfect replacement.  This becomes my coffee and fuel for the workout without leaving me needing to head to the restroom of feel a bit off from having normal food in me.  It has 100 mg of caffeine which is just under a cup of coffee.

This is a vegetarian product but has milk products so it misses the vegan standard.

Chocolate Ingredients List: Agave Syrup, Brown Rice Syrup, Evaporated Cane, Sugar, Water, Whey Protein Isolate, Glycerin, Pea Protein Isolate, Cocoa, Natural Flavors, Green Tea Extract (caffeine), d-alpha-Tocopheryl Acetate, Salt, Grape, Pomegranate, Mangosteen, Goji Berry, Blue Berry, Chokeberry, Cranberry, Apple, and Bilberry Extracts

I would suggest buying this primarily to try as an early morning gel.  And if you happen to really like it, use it more often.  I’m more inclined to use fruit flavored gels once I get on my way during a run/day.  It is affordable and there is all sorts of good stuff in it to help you sustain tough workouts of any type. You can find it for the best price on amazon – Accel Gel 2nd Surge: Chocolate.  As always thanks for reading and check out our other reviews.
